Community honours 4 Walkerton, Ont., teens and teacher killed in multi-vehicle crash

The small town of Walkerton, Ont., is in mourning after a tragic multi-vehicle crash claimed the lives of four teenage athletes and their teacher last week. As a way to show their grief and support for the victims’ families, residents in Walkerton turned on their porch lights and left running shoes outside their homes. A candlelight vigil was also planned at the Walkerton District Community School, where the teenaged girls attended and where their teacher, 33-year-old Matt Eckert, worked as a coach.
The collision, which occurred outside London, has deeply affected the tight-knit community of Walkerton. Mayor Chris Peabody expressed the profound impact of the tragedy, stating, “It’s an incredibly deep scar this has inflicted our community. It’s going to take a long time to heal.” He emphasized the resilience of small town Ontario residents and their ability to come together in times of adversity.
The victims were returning home from a softball tournament when their SUV collided with a transport truck at Thorndale and Cobble Hills roads. The SUV was then struck by a second SUV, resulting in the tragic loss of five lives. Ontario Provincial Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the crash at the intersection with a two-way stop for vehicles.
Two 17-year-old victims died at the scene, while Matt Eckert and another 16-year-old girl succumbed to their injuries at the hospital. The driver of the transport truck and two occupants of the second SUV sustained minor injuries. The identities of the teenagers have not been released, but Eckert, who also served as a Junior B assistant coach for the NorthStars Lacrosse Club in Owen Sound, is being remembered for his impact on the community.
The NorthStars Lacrosse Club paid tribute to Eckert, describing him as a beloved member of their family with an infectious smile and caring heart. The loss of Eckert and the four teenagers has shaken Walkerton and beyond, prompting an outpouring of support and expressions of grief. The Bluewater District School Board has offered mental health support for students and staff affected by the tragedy, recognizing the widespread impact on the entire community.
As Walkerton comes to terms with this devastating loss, the community stands united in solidarity and support for the families of the victims. The healing process will be long and difficult, but the strength and resilience of small town Ontario are sure to shine through in the face of this tragedy.
