Conservative MP Luc Berthold says he has prostate cancer but not stepping down

Conservative MP Luc Berthold Diagnosed with Prostate Cancer, Plans to Run in Next Federal Election
On Sunday, Conservative MP Luc Berthold announced that he has been diagnosed with prostate cancer but remains determined to run in the next federal election, despite needing surgery. The long-time Member of Parliament for Quebec’s Mégantic—L’Érable federal riding shared the news on social media, revealing that he received the diagnosis in 2024.
In a heartfelt post on Facebook, Berthold disclosed, “My prostate is sick and it has cancer. In the next few weeks, I’ll have to undergo surgery to remove it in order to prevent the disease from spreading to other parts of my body.” He also opened up about the emotional impact of the diagnosis, mentioning the loss of both his parents to cancer.
Despite the challenging news, Berthold expressed optimism as the cancer has not spread beyond his prostate, allowing for treatment and surgery to be scheduled in Quebec City in the near future. He reassured his constituents that he has no plans to step down as an MP and intends to run in the upcoming federal election for the new riding of Mégantic-l’Érable-Lotbinière.
However, Berthold acknowledged that he will need to take some time off to recover from the operation post-surgery. He emphasized the importance of his health and well-being, stating that the operation may coincide with the election campaign but he remains committed to serving his constituents.
Luc Berthold was first elected as a Member of Parliament under the federal Conservative Party in 2015 and successfully secured re-election in 2019 and 2021. Prior to his political career, he served as the mayor of Thetford Mines, Quebec, from 2006 to 2013.
