Conservatives decry ‘procedural nonsense’ as NDP forces House debate on abortion

In a surprising tactical move, the NDP successfully shifted the focus in the House of Commons from a Conservative motion to a debate on abortion access. The move caught the Conservatives off guard and derailed their plans to use NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh’s words against him.

NDP MP Heather McPherson took the floor just before the scheduled time for the Conservative motion, steering the discussion towards a foreign affairs committee report on Canada’s global assistance for sexual and reproductive health rights. She used the opportunity to criticize the Conservatives for their ties to abortion opponents and accused the Liberals of failing to protect access to abortion services.

When the Conservatives tried to bring the discussion back to their motion, they were outnumbered by the Liberals and NDP who voted against them. Conservative MPs criticized the NDP for what they called an attempt to rescue Singh from a difficult situation.

The Conservative motion quoted Singh’s remarks about the Liberals being too weak and beholden to corporate interests to fight for the people. It also highlighted Singh’s comments about the Liberals intervening in labour disputes to weaken unions. Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre challenged the NDP to stand with unions and support the motion to bring down the Liberal government.

As the government faces a series of opposition motions in the lead-up to the winter holiday break, the dynamics in the House of Commons are shifting. The NDP’s unexpected maneuver not only sidelined the Conservative motion but also brought attention to important issues surrounding abortion access and reproductive rights.
