Conservatives to hold national convention Jan. 29-31 in Calgary
The Conservative Party of Canada has officially announced that their next national convention will take place in Calgary from Jan. 29 to 31. Stephen Barber, president of the party’s national council, expressed his excitement about hosting Conservatives from all over the country in a city that he believes reflects the values of the Conservative Party.
The party has made it clear that they see Prime Minister Mark Carney as following a “destructive Liberal path” of overspending, over-taxing, and over-regulating the lives of Canadians. The upcoming convention will provide an opportunity for Conservatives to address these concerns and strategize for the future.
Despite some setbacks, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has vowed to stay on as leader. While he did manage to increase his party’s seat count in the recent election, he lost his own riding of Carleton. According to the party’s constitution, party members will need to vote on whether Poilievre should retain his position as leader at the upcoming convention.
In order for Poilievre to re-enter the House and assume the role of Opposition leader, he must win a byelection as he lost his seat to Liberal MP Bruce Fanjoy. Battle River-Crowfoot MP Damien Kurek has graciously stepped aside to allow Poilievre to run in his Alberta riding, which is considered one of the safest Conservative seats in the country.
Kurek, who first won his seat in 2019 and was re-elected this year with an overwhelming majority, officially resigned to make way for Poilievre. A byelection could be called as soon as this month and must take place within 180 days.
While there may be some delays in Poilievre’s return to the House, Prime Minister Carney has assured that he will call the race promptly to bring the Conservative leader back to Parliament. The convention in Calgary will serve as a crucial moment for the Conservative Party to regroup, strategize, and plan for the future amidst changing political landscapes.
