Crews are battling a fire at a two-storey building in downtown Kentville, N.S.

Fire Chief Scott Hamilton said the fire is in a commercial building, and surrounding buildings have been evacuated.

The Town of Kentville is asking people to avoid the downtown area. Traffic is being detoured.

Smoke could be seen billowing in the area of Main Street just before noon on Tuesday.

Peggy McCalla was in the area when she started to hear sirens and spotted a puff of smoke. They decided to pull over on Main Street.

“I couldn’t see flames but suddenly there was a huge wall of thick black smoke,” she said, adding she believes the fire was on Aberdeen Street.

Hamilton said no injuries have been reported.
