Crown stays new charges against high-risk offender in HRM

The Crown has stayed a raft of new charges against a high-risk offender who was released in the Halifax area in October.

Gamon Jay Leacock was arrested Jan. 4 and charged with criminal harassment, extortion, fraud under $5,000, uttering threats, four counts of use and possession of stolen credit cards, unlawfully being in a dwelling house, theft under $5,000 and two counts of failing to comply with release conditions.

Police said after the arrest that they received a report on Dec. 28 of alleged incidents between October and December involving Leacock and a woman who was known to him. The allegations included that he had broken into the woman’s residence on a number of occasions and threatened her to obtain property and cash from her.

Leacock was also the subject of a peace bond application brought forward by the woman. He entered into that one-year agreement this past Tuesday.

The stay on all the charges doesn’t mean they are dropped, just that the Crown isn’t proceeding with them right now. They can bring the charges back before the courts at any point in the next year.

Police issued a public notice in October that Leacock had moved to HRM after being released from federal prison, where he served a 14-year sentence for 30 convictions including robbery, uttering threats, sexual assault with a weapon, forcible confinement, administering a noxious substance, criminal harassment and intimidation of a justice system participant.
