Cuomo lands key labor union backing as comeback bid for NYC mayor heats up

Former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has secured the endorsement of two influential labor unions as he vies for the position of mayor of New York City. The backing of the labor groups 32BJ SEIU and Hotel and Gaming Trades Council, which represent building service workers and hotel and casino employees, is a significant boost for Cuomo’s campaign.

The support of these unions, which boast a combined membership of over 120,000 workers, is highly sought after in unionized New York City and is expected to solidify Cuomo’s position as the frontrunner in the upcoming Democratic Party mayoral primary in June. His main opponent in the race is the embattled Mayor Eric Adams.

In a statement on social media, Cuomo expressed gratitude for the endorsement, emphasizing the crucial role that union members play in the city’s infrastructure. He highlighted his longstanding relationship with the two unions and their shared commitment to strengthening the middle class.

Cuomo’s entry into the mayoral race earlier this year caused a stir, catapulting him to the top of the polls and fundraising charts. Despite facing scrutiny over multiple scandals, including allegations of sexual harassment and mishandling of the COVID-19 pandemic, Cuomo remains a formidable contender.

His rivals are focusing on exploiting his political baggage, particularly the cloud of allegations that forced his resignation as governor in 2021. Cuomo has vehemently denied any wrongdoing and is determined to clear his name.

On the other hand, Mayor Adams has been grappling with his own legal troubles, including accusations of bribery and fraud. His approval ratings have been declining, prompting him to announce his decision to run for re-election as an independent candidate.

As the Democratic primary draws near, the spotlight is on Cuomo and Adams as they navigate the complexities of a fiercely competitive mayoral race in one of the country’s most populous cities. The outcome of the primary will likely determine the frontrunner in the general election, with the Democratic nominee expected to have a strong advantage in the heavily Democratic city.
