Canadiens exec not concerned by members’ travel to Russia

DETROIT – Montreal Executives Visit Russia Despite Ongoing Conflict

Montreal executive vice president of hockey operations Jeff Gorton has expressed confidence in the safety of members of the Canadiens’ front office who are currently in Russia amidst the country’s war in Ukraine. Gorton stated that he has “no concern” about the trip, which includes Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes, scout Nick Bobrov, and special adviser Vincent Lecavalier.

The purpose of the visit is to meet with first-round draft pick Ivan Demidov of SKA Saint Petersburg in the KHL. Gorton clarified that the trip is solely for scouting purposes and to support their prospects around the world. He emphasized that once a player is part of the Canadiens organization, they are considered part of the family, and it is important to monitor their progress and provide feedback on their performance.

Despite the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Russia and its ally Belarus have been banned from participating in International Ice Hockey Federation tournaments. The NHL also excluded Russia from the recent 4 Nations Face-Off tournament. This decision was made in light of the geopolitical situation and to show solidarity with Ukraine.

The Canadian government advises against all travel to Russia due to the conflict and terrorism risks, while the U.S. government warns of potential harassment and detention by Russian security officials. Despite these warnings, Gorton assured that Hughes’ trip is brief and focused on scouting multiple players in Russia who are part of the Canadiens’ organization.

Gorton concluded by emphasizing the importance of supporting their players worldwide and ensuring that they have the necessary resources for development. The Canadiens remain committed to their prospects regardless of the challenges posed by global events.
