Dan Crenshaw: Europeans can boost defense spending or ‘shut up’ on Ukraine negotiations

Rep. Dan Crenshaw, R-Texas, recently made headlines with his strong stance on European involvement in negotiations to end the conflict in Ukraine. In an interview on Politico’s “Power Play” podcast, Crenshaw emphasized the need for European countries to increase their defense spending if they want to have a seat at the negotiating table.

Crenshaw bluntly stated that Europeans complaining about not having a larger role in negotiations need to either step up their defense efforts or “shut up.” He argued that Europeans have not “earned a seat” at the table and won’t unless they demonstrate a commitment by placing 50,000 troops on the border of Poland to strengthen NATO and deter Russia.

The Trump administration has been actively working to end the war in Ukraine, with officials meeting with Russian counterparts in Saudi Arabia and Ukraine. Crenshaw’s comments came in response to calls from NATO members, such as German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, for Europe to play a more significant role in the peace process.

Crenshaw dismissed these calls, urging European countries to show strength and leverage in order to be taken seriously. He emphasized the importance of European NATO members increasing their defense efforts, aligning with statements from Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and other Trump administration officials.

The U.S. currently spends a significant portion of its GDP on defense, with more than 50% of NATO funding coming from the U.S. Other allies, such as the UK, France, and Germany, have contributed less in recent years. Crenshaw praised UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer for committing to increase defense spending and potentially sending troops to Ukraine to maintain peace.

Crenshaw highlighted the importance of deterring Russian aggression and ensuring safety on the European continent. He expressed support for efforts that make Putin nervous and prevent further incursions. As the Trump administration continues peace negotiations, Crenshaw’s strong stance on European defense spending serves as a reminder of the need for unity and strength in the face of international conflicts.
