Danish national arrested after allegedly spying on Jewish targets for Iran

A Danish national, identified as Ali S., was apprehended in Denmark on suspicion of collecting information on Jewish sites and individuals in Berlin for Iranian intelligence. The German and Danish authorities disclosed this news on Tuesday. According to German prosecutors, Ali S. was instructed by an Iranian intelligence agency earlier this year to gather data on “Jewish localities and specific Jewish individuals” in Berlin.

The alleged espionage activities took place in June, where Ali S. reportedly conducted surveillance on three locations, potentially in preparation for further intelligence operations, including potential terrorist attacks on Jewish targets. German security authorities heightened security measures for Jewish and Israeli establishments in response to the recent conflict between Israel and Iran.

The suspect is accused of photographing buildings, including the German-Israeli Society headquarters and a building where Josef Schuster, the President of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, was known to frequent. The German-Israeli Society condemned the alleged actions, urging the European Union to designate Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Corps as a terrorist organization.

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul expressed outrage over the incident, emphasizing that if the suspicions are confirmed, it would demonstrate Iran’s threat to Jews worldwide. The Iranian Embassy in Berlin refuted the accusations, labeling them as unfounded and dangerous, suggesting they were a diversion from Israeli attacks on Iran.

Schuster emphasized the need for the German government to take proactive measures against the Iranian regime, stating that there should be no tolerance for such planned terrorist activities. Ali S. is set to be extradited to Germany, where he will appear before a judge of Germany’s Federal Court of Justice. He is currently in custody in Denmark until his extradition on July 23.

The Iranian Ambassador to Germany, Majid Nili Ahmadabadi, was summoned to the German Foreign Ministry in response to the incident. The Iranian Embassy dismissed the allegations as a distraction tactic and reiterated its commitment to diplomacy. The ongoing investigation into Ali S.’s activities underscores the importance of vigilance and international cooperation in combating threats to security and stability.
