Davies scores late equalizer to send Bayern Munich into Champions League round of 16

A Kiss and a Gesture to the Badge: Alphonso Davies Sends Bayern Munich into the Champions League Last 16
Alphonso Davies finally showed Bayern Munich some love on Tuesday when his goal sent the Bavarian powerhouse into the last 16 of the Champions League. The wing back, hailing from Edmonton, bundled the ball over the line in the fourth minute of stoppage time for a 1-1 draw with Celtic, securing Bayern’s spot in the next round. Bayern had won the first leg 2-1 in Glasgow, progressing 3-2 on aggregate and avoiding the ordeal of extra time in the playoff.
“It was instinct,” Davies said of his goal, his second in the Champions League. “I’m happy to get another one.”

The 24-year-old Davies, who recently signed a new contract with Bayern through June 2030, kissed the Bayern crest on his jersey and pointed to it after scoring the crucial goal. This gesture was a display of loyalty and commitment, something that Bayern’s management had been eager to see as contract negotiations with Davies had been ongoing.
Davies’ previous contract was set to expire at the end of the season, leading to speculation about his future with reported interest from Real Madrid. However, Bayern and Davies ultimately reached an agreement on a new deal worth around 20 million euros ($21 million US) per year for the player.
The goal against Celtic not only secured Bayern’s spot in the last 16 but also brought in additional prize money of 11 million euros ($11.5 million) from UEFA. Davies’ contribution on the field is now matched by his commitment off it, as he continues to prove his worth to the club.
“That’s the Champions League,” Davies commented after the match. “We played against a strong Celtic team. They play with a lot of intensity. We’re happy to go through. It’s not easy. We’re playing so many games.”
Bayern will now await the draw on Friday to determine their opponent in the last 16, with their focus shifting to a Bundesliga fixture against Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday. The momentum from Davies’ goal and Bayern’s progression in the Champions League will surely carry them forward as they continue their pursuit of silverware this season.
