Deadline looms for release of JFK assassination files

The Director of National Intelligence (DNI) and the attorney general are set to unveil their proposed plan for the declassification of the JFK files on Friday. The offices, along with the Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs and the Counsel to the President, have a deadline until the end of the day Friday to release their plan.

President Donald Trump recently signed an executive order to declassify files related to the assassinations of former President John F. Kennedy, his brother Robert F. Kennedy, and civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. Trump, during the signing in the Oval Office, assured reporters that “Everything will be revealed.”

This executive order came after Trump’s campaign promise to declassify the documents in his second term. He had previously pledged to release the last batch of documents during his first term, but those efforts were stalled. Trump ultimately blocked the release of hundreds of records following appeals from the CIA and FBI, citing potential harm to national security.

Attorney General Pam Bondi, who was recently sworn in, has not yet addressed Trump’s order to declassify the JFK assassination files. She is currently in New Orleans, Louisiana, focusing on Super Bowl LIX security. Bondi’s priorities include cracking down on violent crime and acts of terrorism.

Tulsi Gabbard, Trump’s nominee for DNI, successfully advanced out of the Intel Committee this week, with unanimous support from Republican members. Gabbard has faced scrutiny during her confirmation process regarding her past interactions with former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, her stance on FISA Section 702, and her support for NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden.
