Death of man on Halifax boardwalk determined to be homicide

The death of a 26-year-old man that occurred over the weekend in Halifax has been ruled a homicide.

On Sunday at about 9:40 p.m., police received a report of a disturbance that had occurred on the Halifax waterfront in the area of the 1500 block of Lower Water Street.

Officers located an unresponsive man on the boardwalk. The victim was transported to hospital, where he died.

The Nova Scotia Medical Examiner Service conducted an autopsy and has ruled the manner of death to be a homicide, according to a news release issued Wednesday.

The victim has been identified as Davelle Rodney Vance Desmond.

Const. John MacLeod said Tuesday that police aren’t commenting on whether or not a weapon was involved or what is believed to have caused the fatal injury. Some online reports suggest Desmond was assaulted and struck his head.

Whether the assault was a random incident or carried out by someone known to Desmond is still part of the investigation, said MacLeod.

There have been no arrests or charges laid.

Members from the Special Investigations Section of the Integrated Criminal Investigation Division continue to investigate the case and are asking anyone who has not already spoken with police but who has information or video from the area to call them at 902-490-5020.

Desmond and his girlfriend were expecting a child in November, online posts say. His uncle, Kevin Desmond, has started a gofundme campaign to help with funeral costs and for after the baby is born.
