Death threats sent to Republican Senator’s office over Trump support

Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., and his staff and family have recently been the targets of harassment and death threats, according to a memo released by his office on Thursday afternoon. The senator’s senior advisor, Daniel Keylin, stated that the volume of threats and harassment directed at members of Congress and their staff has become the new normal.
Voicemails shared by Tillis’ team, filled with profanity and fueled by discontent with President Donald Trump, reveal a frightening new reality. One caller even said, “Yeah, Thom Tillis, afraid of death threats? Then get the f— out of office.” Another caller expressed outrage over Trump’s policies and included violent threats to Tillis and his staff.
Tillis’ office in Greenville, North Carolina, received a handwritten and unsigned letter postmarked in Greensboro last month, calling his staff members “sacrificial lambs” and insisting they “signed up to be his shield.” The anonymous writer, while stating “in no way is this a threat,” warned that people are going to start “coming in filled with rage.”
The anonymous letter references “America’s transition to oligarchy,” a term used by the left to describe the alleged rising power of the billionaire class. This term has been highlighted by figures such as Sen. Bernie Sanders and former President Joe Biden, who have spoken out against the influence of extreme wealth and power in American politics.
Indivisible Guilford County, a progressive political action group, organized a protest at Tillis’ Greensboro office, where protesters attempted to break into the office. This led to law enforcement directing the senator’s office to work from home on days when protests are planned for safety and security reasons.
Tillis has faced death threats in the past, including a U.S. citizen living abroad who was arrested for threatening to kill him and cut off the hands of his staffers in 2023. Additionally, a Minnesota man was indicted in 2022 for threatening to kill Tillis.
Protests have disrupted town halls and legislative offices in recent months, leading Republicans to opt for tele-town halls instead of in-person events. Democrats have accused Republicans of ignoring their constituents’ concerns by avoiding face-to-face interactions.
MoveOn.org, which has received funding from billionaire George Soros, has announced initiatives aimed at pressuring lawmakers to oppose the Trump agenda. The group has planned protests at congressional town halls and offices as part of their efforts.
In response to the escalating threats and harassment, Tillis’ office has taken precautions to ensure the safety of the senator, his staff, and his family. The memo emphasizes the importance of prioritizing security in the face of increasing hostility and unrest.
Despite the challenges and risks faced by Tillis and his team, they remain committed to serving their constituents and upholding their duties as elected officials. The resilience and determination displayed in the face of adversity highlight the dedication of Tillis and his staff to their roles in public service.
