Death toll in devastating Burma, Thailand earthquake rises to more than 1,600 victims

The devastating earthquake that struck Burma and Thailand on Friday has left a trail of destruction, with the death toll rising sharply to over 1,650 victims. The epicenter of the 7.7 magnitude quake was in central Burma, where 1,644 people have been confirmed dead and nearly 140 individuals are still missing, according to the nation’s ruling military.
The quake caused widespread devastation, knocking down numerous buildings, bridges, and highways in what has been described as the deadliest natural disaster to hit the impoverished and war-torn country in years. Survivors in Mandalay, Burma’s second-largest city, were seen digging with their bare hands in desperate attempts to rescue those trapped under the rubble, as heavy machinery was lacking and authorities were initially absent. However, Burma’s military rulers eventually allowed in hundreds of foreign rescue personnel to assist in the efforts.
The quake struck during Friday prayers across the country, leading to the collapse of at least 50 mosques and claiming the lives of nearly 300 people, as reported by the Yangon Khit Thit News Agency. Initial assessments by Burma’s opposition National Unity Government indicated that thousands of buildings, roads, and bridges had been damaged by the earthquake.
The disaster comes at a challenging time for Burma, as the country is embroiled in a civil war that has severely impacted the economy and displaced millions of people. The ongoing conflict has made movement within the country difficult and dangerous, complicating relief efforts and raising concerns that the death toll could continue to rise.
In neighboring Thailand, the earthquake also caused significant damage, with at least ten people reported dead and numerous buildings affected, including a 33-story apartment building under construction in Bangkok that collapsed, resulting in casualties and injuries. Despite the widespread destruction, Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra stated that the country has now “returned to normalcy.”
Aftershocks from the earthquake were felt in India and China, underscoring the widespread impact of the disaster. Photos and videos from Burma showcased the extent of the damage in hard-hit cities like Mandalay, where historic structures and infrastructure were severely affected.
President Donald Trump expressed his condolences for the victims of the earthquake and pledged support from the United States in the relief efforts. As rescue and recovery operations continue in both Burma and Thailand, the international community stands ready to assist in rebuilding and providing aid to those affected by this tragic event.
