Dem accused of assaulting feds at ICE protest is subject of Mace expulsion motion

Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., made headlines on Wednesday by introducing a House resolution aimed at expelling Democratic New Jersey Rep. LaMonica McIver. The move comes just one day after McIver was hit with federal charges for allegedly assaulting law enforcement officers during a protest at a federal immigrant detention center earlier this month.

“In attacking Homeland Security and ICE agents on May 9th, McIver not only broke the law but also targeted those who uphold it,” Mace stated in a press release announcing the House Resolution. She emphasized that assaulting law enforcement officers is not only disgraceful but constitutes a serious offense that warrants prosecution to the fullest extent of the law. Mace stressed that being a Member of Congress does not exempt McIver from facing consequences for her actions.

The Department of Justice revealed the federal charges against McIver on Monday, accusing her of assaulting, impeding, and interfering with law enforcement at the Delaney Hall immigrant detention facility in Newark. McIver was at the facility alongside two other members of Congress to carry out what they claimed were their oversight duties mandated by Congress. The Mayor of Newark, Ras Baraka, was also present during the incident and was arrested but later had his charges dropped.

Mace’s resolution highlights the fact that the House of Representatives has a history of expelling members who face serious criminal charges. It underscores the importance of accountability and upholding the law, regardless of one’s position in government.

As this story continues to develop, stay tuned for updates on the resolution and its potential impact on McIver’s future in Congress.
