Dem governor threatens to use ‘every tool’ to fight back against Trump-era deportations

In a recent interview on MSNBC, Massachusetts Democratic Gov. Maura Healey made it clear that her state police will not be cooperating with the expected mass deportation effort by the incoming Trump administration. Healey emphasized that she will use “every tool in the toolbox” to protect residents in the blue state.

When asked whether the Massachusetts State Police would assist the federal government in the mass deportation of illegal immigrants, Healey firmly stated, “No. Absolutely not.” She acknowledged the pressure on states and state officials but assured that Massachusetts would resist any efforts to participate in the deportation operation.

Healey, who previously served as the state’s attorney general, has a history of challenging the Trump administration through lawsuits. She hinted at potential resistance in 2025, including litigation, regulation, executive authority, and legislative action. Emphasizing the importance of protecting citizens and upholding democracy and the rule of law, Healey stressed the need to utilize all available tools.

Massachusetts has been grappling with a migrant surge from the southern border, prompting Healey to declare a state of emergency last year and call for federal action. She acknowledged that the state’s policies may attract migrants and outlined various challenges, including immigration laws, work authorization issues, housing shortages, and increased migration.

In a letter to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, Healey urged for congressional action and executive measures to address barriers to work permits, overhaul outdated immigration laws, and provide financial assistance to the state. Massachusetts has prioritized supporting migrants with work authorizations, job training, English classes, and rehousing assistance.
