Democrat Derek Tran unseats Rep. Michelle Steel in California’s 45th Congressional District
First-time Democratic candidate Derek Tran wins California’s 45th Congressional District
First-time Democratic candidate and Army veteran Derek Tran has emerged victorious in California’s 45th Congressional District, defeating Trump-endorsed Rep. Michelle Steel in a closely watched race, according to The Associated Press.
Tran’s victory is significant as he challenged Steel in what was traditionally a conservative district. Over the years, the district has transitioned into somewhat of a swing district, encompassing areas like Fountain Valley, Westminster, and Garden Grove in Orange County.
The voting demographic of the district is predominantly Asian American, reflecting the diverse constituency that Tran will now represent in Congress.

Moving forward, Tran’s victory marks a shift in representation for the district. Steel, who was previously elected to Congress in the neighboring 48th District in 2020, had flipped the district red by defeating incumbent Democrat Harley Rhouda. In 2018, Democrat Katie Porter had also flipped the district blue by defeating Republican incumbent Mimi Waters.
Despite Steel reclaiming the seat in 2020 and narrowly holding onto it in 2022, Tran’s win signals a changing political landscape in CA-45. The district, which had been Republican-dominated, supported President Biden in 2020 by a margin of around 6%.
In response to his defeat, Steel expressed gratitude for the opportunities afforded to her in the U.S. and pledged to continue serving the country in different capacities. She thanked her supporters, staff, family, and voters for their unwavering support throughout her political journey.
