Democrat mayor vows major city will be ‘safe haven’ for illegal immigrants

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey remains steadfast in his opposition to President Donald Trump and Border Czar Tom Homan’s immigration enforcement policies. In a recent town hall meeting with fellow Democratic leaders, including Rep. Ilhan Omar, Frey reiterated his commitment to making Minneapolis a “safe haven” for undocumented immigrants.

Frey emphasized that regardless of one’s background or immigration status, Minneapolis is a place where everyone should feel welcome and proud to call home. This stance aligns with Frey’s previous statements where he declared that Minneapolis police would not inquire about individuals’ immigration status or arrest anyone solely for being in the country illegally.

House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, representing the Minneapolis suburbs and surrounding areas, criticized Frey’s position, urging him to prioritize the safety of city residents over protecting criminal illegal aliens. Emmer and other Minnesota Republicans had previously written a letter to Frey expressing concerns about the potential threats posed by illegal immigrants, citing instances where ICE apprehended a known terrorist and child sex predators in the area.

Despite the backlash, Frey remains resolute in his support for undocumented immigrants, reiterating his commitment to standing up for and assisting them in any way possible. While critics argue that Frey’s policies undermine public safety, the mayor continues to champion inclusivity and compassion for all residents of Minneapolis.

As the debate over immigration enforcement rages on, Frey’s unwavering stance on providing sanctuary for undocumented immigrants sets him apart as a vocal advocate for immigrant rights in the face of federal pressure. The city of Minneapolis stands as a symbol of tolerance and acceptance, even as it navigates the complexities of balancing public safety with humanitarian concerns.
