Democrat moves to force House-wide Trump impeachment vote

A lone House Democrat is making a bold move to push for a chamber-wide vote on his impeachment resolution against President Donald Trump. Rep. Shri Thanedar, D-Mich., introduced the impeachment resolution as privileged, giving House leaders two days to consider the legislation.
House GOP leaders have the option to table the motion, a procedural move to block the legislation without a direct vote. However, an impeachment vote could put vulnerable House Democrats in a difficult position. With the party struggling to unify behind a clear message post-2024 election, a vote on impeachment could be politically risky for Democrats aiming to regain the House majority in 2026.
While no Republicans are expected to support impeaching Trump, Thanedar’s resolution is likely to fail. “Donald Trump has unlawfully conducted himself, bringing shame to the presidency and the people of the United States,” Thanedar stated when declaring his resolution privileged.
In addition to the impeachment resolution, Thanedar criticized the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), labeling it as a “flagrantly unconstitutional creation.” The Michigan Democrat had previously introduced seven articles of impeachment against Trump, citing charges of obstruction of justice, tyranny, bribery, corruption, and abuse of trade powers.
When asked for a response to the move, White House spokesperson Liz Huston defended Trump’s actions, stating that every decision made by the administration is lawful and reflects the will of the American people. She accused Democrats of prioritizing illegal immigrants over American citizens and dismissed the impeachment effort as a “reckless political act.”
Despite facing some initial hurdles with co-sponsors retracting their support, Thanedar is moving forward with the impeachment push while Trump is on a diplomatic trip to the Middle East. This comes after Rep. Al Green, D-Texas, also threatened to file impeachment articles against Trump and was ejected from Trump’s congressional address for protesting.
The political landscape remains tense as Democrats navigate the impeachment process and Republicans stand firm in support of the president. The outcome of Thanedar’s impeachment resolution remains uncertain, but it underscores the deep political divisions within Congress.
