Democratic socialist Mamdani defeats Cuomo in NYC mayoral primary
Zohran Mamdani, a democratic socialist and state assembly member from Queens, is on the cusp of making history by potentially becoming the mayor of New York City. With a surge in support from progressive and younger voters, Mamdani emerged as a frontrunner in the city’s Democratic Party mayoral primary, edging out former Gov. Andrew Cuomo and nine other candidates in a crowded field.
The election, which utilized ranked-choice voting, saw Mamdani’s campaign resonate strongly with young people and inspire them to come out and vote. Former Gov. Cuomo, acknowledging Mamdani’s impressive campaign, conceded defeat and congratulated him on his victory. Despite facing criticism from Cuomo for his perceived lack of experience and controversial stance on Israel, Mamdani’s message resonated with New York City voters. As he moves on to the general election in November, Mamdani will face off against Curtis Sliwa, the Republican nominee and founder of the Guardian Angels, as well as incumbent Mayor Eric Adams, who is running for re-election as an independent.
