Democratic socialist Mamdani shocks NY establishment in mayoral primary
Zohran Mamdani’s stunning victory in the New York Democratic primary has sent shockwaves through the political establishment, highlighting a clear generational divide among Democrats in the state. Mamdani’s win, which came as a surprise to many, has sparked a debate within the party about its future direction and the kind of leadership that is needed in the city.
While progressive leaders like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez threw their support behind Mamdani, moderate Democrats like Rep. Tom Suozzi, who endorsed former Gov. Andrew Cuomo in the race, have expressed reservations about the Assemblyman. Suozzi, in a statement, revealed that he had concerns about Mamdani before the primary and that those concerns still remain.
National Democratic leaders like Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries have not yet endorsed Mamdani, despite his decisive win. Schumer praised Mamdani’s campaign but did not elaborate on what his victory means for the party’s future. Jeffries, on the other hand, congratulated Mamdani but stopped short of endorsing him.
Mamdani’s platform, which includes proposals like government-run grocery stores, free bus service, tuition-free city universities, rent freezes, and free childcare, has been criticized by some as radical. Moderate Democrats like Sen. Kristen Gillibrand and Reps. Ritchie Torres, Adriano Espaillat, and Pat Ryan have also not endorsed Mamdani, raising questions about whether the party will unite behind him in the general election.
Longtime congressman Jerry Nadler, however, has thrown his support behind Mamdani, drawing parallels between his victory and President Barack Obama’s political rise. Nadler emphasized Mamdani’s commitment to fighting against bigotry and hate, despite accusations of antisemitism due to his refusal to condemn certain controversial statements.
On the Republican side, former Gov. Andrew Cuomo has confirmed that he will not drop out of the race and will run on the “Fight & Deliver” ballot line. Mayor Eric Adams has also announced his re-election campaign as an independent, while former federal prosecutor Jim Walden and Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa will also be on the ballot in November.
