Democratic strategist advises against discussing migrant crime, carjackings

Fox News Digital has reported on a recent statement made by Insha Rahman, the vice president of advocacy and partnerships at the Vera Institute of Justice, a far-left criminal justice reform group. During a Democratic National Committee meeting in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Rahman stirred controversy by downplaying the significance of migrant crime and carjackings, suggesting that these issues “don’t matter to that many Americans.”
Rahman urged Democrats to focus on rejecting President Donald Trump’s crime crackdown, labeling it as a “political liability.” She emphasized that Trump’s approach to crime is more about seizing political power than ensuring public safety.
The Vera Institute, where Rahman holds a senior position, has a history of advocating for defunding the police. In a statement during the 2020 anti-police protests following George Floyd’s murder, the Institute called for dismantling the current policing culture in the United States.
Conservatives have criticized Rahman for her rhetoric and highlighted the Vera Institute’s ties to the Defund the Police movement. They have pointed out the organization’s financial support from entities like the Biden DOJ, the Open Society Foundations, Rockefeller, Tides, the Ford Foundation, and MacKenzie Scott.
The Vera Institute’s mission is to challenge the “racist” criminal justice system and promote alternative solutions to traditional policing. Fox News Digital previously reported on the Institute’s receipt of a $171.7 million federal contract to provide legal aid to unaccompanied minors.
In response to Trump’s recent push for federal law enforcement intervention in major U.S. cities, Rahman advised Democrats to focus on promoting policies that prioritize safety over wealth. She also urged them to challenge Trump’s narrative on crime reduction and emphasize the role of Democratic leadership in improving community safety.
Rahman cautioned against falling into the trap of discussing issues like migrant crime and carjackings, which she believes are not top priorities for most Americans. Instead, she encouraged Democrats to engage in honest conversations about crime and policing reforms.
Fox News Digital reached out to the DNC and Vera Institute for comment but did not receive an immediate response. Deirdre Heavey, a politics writer for Fox News Digital, covered this story.
