US Election 2024

Democrats have mixed reaction to Johnson’s speaker victory: ‘Hell has frozen over’

Democratic lawmakers had a range of reactions to the re-election of Republican Rep. Mike Johnson as the speaker of the House for the 119th Congress. The voting took place on Capitol Hill before the new Congress officially began, with Johnson emerging as the winner in the first round of voting. However, not all GOP lawmakers initially supported his candidacy.

During the initial round of voting, three Republicans opted for candidates other than Johnson. But after a brief meeting with Johnson in the GOP cloakroom, Republican holdouts Ralph Norman and Keith Self changed their votes, ultimately securing the speakership for Johnson.

The uncertainty surrounding the Republican holdouts prompted reactions from Democrats on social media. House Minority Leader Rep. Hakeem Jeffries commented on the situation, referring to it as a “GOP Civil War” unfolding on Day 1. Meanwhile, Rep. Melanie Stansbury expressed disappointment in the dysfunction within the Republican party, hoping to move past it and focus on serving the American people.

Despite the initial challenges, Johnson managed to secure the speakership in a single vote, a stark contrast to the four-day process it took Republican lawmakers to elect a speaker in January 2023. Rep. Hank Johnson commended Johnson for his strategic approach in securing the necessary votes and winning the gavel.

Following Johnson’s victory, the tone shifted among Democrats. Rep. Jasmine Crockett celebrated the swift resolution, joking that “Hell has frozen over” with the quick decision. Rep. Morgan McGarvey urged for unity and collaboration now that a speaker had been elected.

Democratic lawmakers also extended their congratulations to Johnson on his re-election as Speaker of the House. Rep. Jake Auchincloss highlighted the bipartisan bills awaiting action that could benefit Americans, emphasizing the importance of immediate action on issues like affordable housing, prescription drug costs, and border security.

In a show of solidarity, Democratic lawmakers unanimously voted for Representative-elect Hakeem Jeffries of New York. Rep. Katherine Clark underscored the unity among House Democrats in supporting Jeffries throughout the voting process.

The re-election of Mike Johnson as the speaker of the House marked a significant moment in the 119th Congress, setting the stage for legislative priorities and bipartisan cooperation in the days ahead.
