Democrats shift toward Musk as he battles Trump on ‘pork-filled’ legislation

Democrats are facing a new dilemma as they navigate their relationship with former Department of Government Efficiency leader Elon Musk. Despite previous criticisms of Musk as a “fascist” or “dictator” for his efforts to cut federal government overspending and fraud during the Trump administration, many Democrats are now embracing Musk as he publicly clashes with President Donald Trump over the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.

In a surprising turn of events, Democrat California Rep. Ro Khanna expressed support for Musk’s criticisms of the legislation, calling on Democrats to convince Musk that the party aligns more closely with his values. Khanna emphasized the importance of science funding, clean technology, and support for international students as shared values between Musk and the Democratic Party.

Similarly, Democrat New York Rep. Ritchie Torres highlighted his belief in redemption and acknowledged Musk’s truthful criticisms of the bill. This shift in opinion comes as Musk finds himself aligned with conservative members of Congress, including the House Freedom Caucus and fiscal conservatives such as Senators Rand Paul and Ron Johnson, who have also criticized the legislation.

Despite these newfound expressions of support for Musk, it’s worth noting that many Democrats had previously condemned Musk for his perceived role in shaping White House policy and delivering what was described as a “Nazi-style salute” to Trump supporters on inauguration day. However, with Musk now openly opposing the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, some Democrats are reevaluating their stance on the controversial figure.

The legislation in question aims to fund President Trump’s agenda but has faced criticism from both Democrats and Republicans for its potential impact on the U.S. debt ceiling. Musk has been vocal in his opposition to the bill, describing it as a “disgusting abomination” and calling on lawmakers to “kill” the legislation.

Trump has responded to Musk’s criticisms by expressing disappointment in their strained relationship and suggesting that Musk’s objections may be tied to cuts to electric vehicle mandates. The two have engaged in a public feud on social media, with Trump accusing Musk of going “crazy” and Musk dismissing Trump’s claims as “an obvious lie.”

As the debate over the One Big Beautiful Bill Act continues, Democrats are faced with the challenge of reconciling their past criticisms of Musk with his current opposition to the legislation. Whether Musk’s newfound alliance with Democrats will endure remains to be seen, but his vocal stance against the bill has certainly stirred up controversy within the party.
