US Election 2024

Democrats slammed, praised for interrupting Trump’s address

Rep. Al Green, D-Texas, caused quite a stir during President Donald Trump’s address to Congress on Tuesday night. As Green and other Democrats protested in the House chamber, they were met with chants of “USA” from supporters of the president. The reactions poured in swiftly on social media, with conservatives slamming the Democrats for their behavior.

Former White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer criticized the Democrats, calling their behavior “out of control” and stating that heckling the president in such a forum was not the way to win. Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina called Green a disgrace and emphasized that Trump had won the election. Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk labeled Green as a “clown” and commended Speaker Mike Johnson for ordering his removal.

American Encore President Sean Noble expressed disappointment in Green’s disruptive actions, calling them shameful but not surprising. Megan McCain also condemned the behavior of the Democrats, urging them to “get a grip” as members of Congress.

However, not everyone saw Green’s actions as negative. Progressive writer Charlotte Clymer praised Green as a “goddamn hero,” while the social media account Dear White Staffers encouraged other Democrats to follow suit. Despite the mixed reactions, Speaker Johnson had the Sergeant at Arms escort Green out of the chamber, much to the delight of Republicans in attendance.

Green, known for his vocal opposition to Trump, had previously filed impeachment articles against the president. His removal from the chamber was just one of many statements made by Democratic lawmakers that evening. Female Democrats wore pink in solidarity, and Rep. Melanie Stansbury briefly held up a sign stating “This is not normal” behind the president before it was taken away by a Republican colleague.

In the midst of intense political divisions, Green’s protest served as a stark reminder of the deep-seated disagreements within Congress. As the dust settles from this latest episode, it remains to be seen how both parties will move forward in their efforts to govern effectively.
