Democrats under fire for Omar event following anti-Semitic Boulder attack

Colorado Democrats are facing backlash for hosting a fundraiser with Rep. Ilhan Omar shortly after a terrorist attack in Boulder that left 12 people injured, including a Holocaust survivor. The suspect, Mohamed Sabry Soliman, has been charged with federal hate crimes and state-level attempted murder charges for using incendiary devices on individuals rallying for the release of hostages in Gaza.

Just 30 minutes after the attack, a private reception was held in Denver with Rep. Omar, known for her criticism of Israel. Ticket prices for the event ranged from $500 to $7,000, with many other Democrats listed as hosts. This timing has drawn criticism from both Republicans and some within the Democratic Party.

Colorado House Minority Caucus Chair Rep. Anthony Hartsook, a Republican, condemned the Democrats for fundraising with an anti-Semite following such a tragic event. He emphasized the need to speak out against extremists and violence targeting Jewish communities.

In response to the backlash, Rep. Junie Joseph, who attended the event with Rep. Omar, stated that she condemns antisemitism and violence in all forms. She clarified that her attendance was a matter of courtesy and civic respect, rather than an endorsement of specific policies or comments.

Despite the controversy, Rep. Joseph reiterated her commitment to dialogue, inclusion, and maintaining open lines of communication, even when views differ. She emphasized the importance of condemning antisemitism while also supporting peace, dignity, and human rights for all individuals, including both Israelis and Palestinians.

The event has sparked a debate over the intersection of politics, fundraising, and moral responsibility in the wake of tragic events. With tensions running high in the aftermath of the terrorist attack, both Democrats and Republicans are calling for unity and a firm stance against hatred and violence targeting any community.
