Derek Sprague Named CEO of PGA of America

Derek Sprague has made history by being selected as the next CEO of the PGA of America, becoming the first club professional to lead the organization in nearly two decades. With 25 years of experience at his hometown Malone Golf Club in New York, Sprague brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to his new role. He also holds the distinction of being the first CEO to have previously served as PGA president.

Sprague, a PGA of America member since 1993, most recently served as the general manager of TPC Sawgrass. Prior to that, he held positions at Liberty National in New Jersey, including overseeing the club during its hosting of the Presidents Cup. His deep understanding of the association and commitment to its members make him a valuable asset in leading the PGA of America into the future.

The announcement of Sprague’s appointment was met with enthusiasm from Don Rea Jr., president of the PGA of America, who expressed confidence in Sprague’s ability to guide the organization to continued success. Sprague himself emphasized the importance of unity and collaboration within the golf industry, highlighting the opportunities for growth and development that lie ahead.

As Sprague takes on his new role, he joins a wave of leadership changes in the golf world. With executives like Martin Slumbers, Mollie Marcoux Samaan, Guy Kinnings, and Jay Monahan all making transitions in their respective organizations, the industry is undergoing significant transformation. The PGA of America’s decision to compensate Ryder Cup players for the first time further underscores the evolution taking place within the sport.

His vision for elevating the profession of PGA professionals while strengthening the association’s industry relationships reflects a commitment to excellence and growth.

The legacy of past PGA of America CEOs, such as Jim Awtrey, Joe Steranka, Pete Bevacqua, and Seth Waugh, serves as a foundation for Sprague’s leadership. With his experience and passion for the game of golf, Sprague is poised to lead the PGA of America into a new era of success and innovation.
