Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has posthumously awarded five notable Floridians, including singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett and former Republican and Democratic politicians, with the prestigious Governor’s Medal of Freedom.
In a statement, DeSantis expressed his pride in recognizing the legacies of these individuals, stating that their contributions have enriched the state of Florida. He further added, “Our state is better for their contributions, and we’re proud they called Florida home. They have each earned the honor of being awarded the Governor’s Medal of Freedom.”
The esteemed recipients of this honor include Buffett, former GOP U.S. Rep. and state congressman Lincoln Diaz-Balart, former Democratic governor and U.S. Sen. Bob Graham, former Democratic governor and U.S. Rep. Buddy MacKay, and former Republican Florida House Speaker John Thrasher.

Buffett, a music icon who passed away at the age of 76, was renowned for hits like “Margaritaville” and “Cheeseburger in Paradise.” Apart from his musical endeavors, Buffett ventured into business, establishing restaurants, resorts, and merchandise under the “Margaritaville” brand.
“His legacy continues to influence music and culture in Florida’s coastal communities,” a release from the governor’s office highlighted.

Diaz-Balart, a staunch advocate against communism and oppression, was exiled from Cuba after the revolution. He dedicated his political career to advocating for a free Cuba and served in various legislative roles in Florida and the U.S. House.
Graham, who passed away at the age of 87, was respected for his work on education, environmental conservation, and national security during his tenure as a governor and U.S. senator.

MacKay, the state’s last Democratic governor, was recognized for his service in various legislative and governmental roles, including being the U.S. Special Envoy for the Americas under the Clinton administration.
Thrasher, who passed away at the age of 81, served in significant leadership positions in Florida, including as the president of Florida State University and chair of the Republican Party of Florida.
