DeSantis responds to Dem decrying state’s move to nix colors in crosswalk

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has responded to criticism from Democratic state Sen. Carlos Guillermo Smith regarding the removal of rainbow colors from a crosswalk in Orlando near the site of the 2016 mass shooting at the Pulse nightclub. In a video posted by Smith, he accused the Florida Department of Transportation of removing the rainbow colors from the crosswalk in the middle of the night.

DeSantis defended the state’s decision, stating, “We will not allow our state roads to be commandeered for political purposes.” The rainbow crosswalk was originally approved by FDOT years ago to honor the 49 victims of the Pulse nightclub shooting and to enhance pedestrian safety. Smith fired back at DeSantis, accusing him of betraying the survivors and breaking his promise to never forget them.

Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer also expressed disappointment over the removal of the Pulse Memorial crosswalk, calling it a “cruel political act.” Dyer emphasized that the crosswalk was installed in coordination with the state and adhered to national safety standards.

In a statement issued by FDOT, the department explained that their priority is to ensure the safety and consistency of public roadways and transportation systems. They cited updates to the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices that prohibit non-uniform traffic control devices, including pavement markings on state and local roads. FDOT notified local governments of these updates and began enforcing compliance with state standards.

While the rainbow crosswalk has been restored to its original form, efforts are underway to construct a permanent memorial on adjacent properties funded by the State of Florida. FDOT reiterated that transportation infrastructure is primarily for the movement of people and goods, and any suggestion otherwise is false.
