Desperate Israelis take tugboats, unusual routes home as Iran conflict escalates

Israelis stranded abroad due to the conflict with Iran are finally making their way back home thanks to a special government operation dubbed “Safe Return.” With the closure of Israeli airspace following the IDF’s strikes on Iran, many citizens found themselves stuck overseas, desperate to return to their families and loved ones.

One such individual, Yaakov Katz, had his flight rerouted to Cyprus as the conflict escalated. Determined to make it back to Israel, he and eight others boarded a tugboat captained by a veteran Israeli sailor named Eli. Despite the challenging conditions, Katz felt it was crucial to be with his family during such a critical time for the nation.

Similarly, Shimi Grossman, a volunteer with rescue agency Zaka, embarked on a journey from the U.S. to London and then to Sharm al-Sheikh in Egypt in order to make his way home. His dedication to helping his fellow Israelis drove him to take whatever means necessary to return.

Meanwhile, others like Josh Hantman watched helplessly from afar as missiles struck their homeland, causing chaos and destruction. The anxiety of not being able to be with loved ones during such a dangerous time was described as torture by Hantman.

Transport Minister Miri Regev assured that the government was working on a comprehensive plan to bring all Israelis back home safely. Rescue flights were already in operation, with domestic airlines ready to transport passengers once the all-clear was given. A maritime route from Cyprus and Greece was also in the works, providing additional options for stranded Israelis.

Despite the challenges and delays, the sense of unity and determination among Israelis to return home and support their country during this crisis is unwavering. As they navigate the uncertainties of travel and the ongoing conflict with Iran, their resilience and commitment to their nation remain steadfast.
