‘Despicable’: Immigration activists fume at blue city mayor’s meeting with Trump border czar
Immigration activists in New York City are up in arms over Mayor Eric Adams’ meeting with incoming Trump border czar Tom Homan. They have accused the mayor of “collaborating” with the new administration, going against the city’s sanctuary policies and values.
Murad Awawdeh, President and CEO of the New York Immigration Coalition, expressed his disappointment, stating, “It’s despicable that Mayor Adams continues to shirk his responsibilities to uphold New York City’s existing policies and values as a sanctuary city by collaborating with Trump’s border czar Tom Homan.”
Mayor Adams has defended his decision to meet with Homan, emphasizing the importance of cooperation on deporting violent criminals. Homan has made it clear that public safety threats will be the primary focus of the expected mass deportation campaign.
Adams has stated, “I’m not going to be warring with this administration, I’m going to be working with this administration. President Trump is the president-elect. And whomever he chooses to run his agencies. I’m looking forward to sitting down and see how do we better New York.”
However, Adams also reassured that otherwise law-abiding immigrants should not be targeted for deportation. He emphasized the need to secure borders and address violent acts while ensuring the safety of citizens.
Despite the mayor’s intentions, activists remain critical of his meeting with Homan. Awawdeh highlighted the potential consequences of collaborating with ICE, citing a past incident where an immigrant in Brooklyn was shot in the face during a confrontation with ICE agents.
Activists argue that targeting immigrants for deportation is counterproductive and diverts resources from initiatives that promote safety and well-being. They urge Mayor Adams to prioritize the public safety of all New Yorkers and reject ICE’s cruel immigration agenda.
Homan, on the other hand, has expressed willingness to meet with Adams to enhance community safety. He stressed the importance of prioritizing public safety threats and working together to achieve this goal.
Mayor Adams’ approach to illegal immigration differs from that of many Democratic counterparts, as he has suggested rolling back sanctuary policies to allow for the deportation of criminals. While some Democrats resist or refuse to assist in deportation operations, Adams is taking a tougher stance on the issue.
In conclusion, the meeting between Mayor Adams and Tom Homan has sparked controversy among immigration activists in New York City. The debate over collaboration with the Trump administration and the impact on immigrant communities continues to be a source of contention.
