Canadian Tennis Player Gabriel Diallo Starts Grass-Court Season with Win at Libema Open

Canadian tennis player Gabriel Diallo began his grass-court season with a strong performance, defeating Australia’s Aleksandar Vukic 7-5, 7-6 (2) on Monday at the Libema Open. The 23-year-old from Montreal showcased his skills with 13 aces and no double faults, securing his first Tour-level win on grass at the ATP/WTA 250 tournament in s’-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands.

The match was tightly contested, with Diallo managing to secure the only break in the final game of the first set. Despite Vukic’s efforts, Diallo’s solid play and strong serving carried him through the 92-minute contest. Diallo saved all four break points he faced, including two crucial ones in the 11th game of the second set.

Looking ahead, Diallo is set to face sixth seed Jordan Thompson from Australia in the second round, promising another exciting match-up for the Canadian tennis player.

On the women’s doubles side, Canadians Bianca Andreescu and Carson Branstine teamed up for a successful victory over the Russian pair of Anastasia Potapova and Ekaterina Alexandrova, winning 7-6 (2), 7-5. The Canadian duo will now prepare to take on the second-seeded team of Hungary’s Fanny Stollar and Russia’s Irina Khromacheva in the upcoming rounds.

Meanwhile, at the WTA 500 Queen’s Club Championships in London, England, Leylah Fernandez of Laval, Quebec, faced a tough first-round match against Germany’s Tatjana Maria. Despite a valiant effort, Fernandez ultimately fell short, losing 7-6 (4), 6-2. Maria’s impressive performance included seven aces and three breaks on seven opportunities, highlighting the challenges faced by Fernandez in the match.
