Digby group opens free food pantry after 2 others vandalized

A dedicated group of volunteers in Digby, N.S., has taken on the responsibility of providing a small free food pantry in the community. The pantry, located outside the Digby Bargain Bin on First Street, is stocked weekly by participants at the Conway Workshop Association, a non-profit organization that serves people with disabilities.
The initiative to open the food pantry came about after two other pantries in town were vandalized in December 2024. Justin Foote and David Axeworthy, participants at Conway Workshop, expressed their frustration and sadness over the senseless act of vandalism. In response to this, the group decided to open their own pantry in a more visible location and installed security cameras to deter any potential vandals.
Kaitlin Benedict, another participant, shared that the pantry is not only stocked with food items but also includes non-food donations like mittens, hats, and scarves for those in need. The pantry is a beacon of hope for people facing food insecurity in the community.
Every Thursday, the pantry is restocked with a variety of items donated by Sobeys, including eggs, baked goods, bread, soups, milk, yogurt, and even birthday cakes. The public is also encouraged to contribute by dropping off items at the pantry. Michelle Bohemeir emphasized the importance of stocking nutritious items to promote good health among pantry visitors.
Joanne Frost-Trimper, the program director at Conway Workshop, highlighted the growing need for assistance in the Digby area. She mentioned that the demand for food support has increased significantly over the past few years, with reports of children going to school without proper meals and a rise in homelessness in the community.
The volunteers at Conway Workshop are committed to addressing food insecurity and supporting those in need in Digby. Their efforts not only provide essential food items but also spread kindness and compassion in the community. The new food pantry stands as a symbol of solidarity and generosity, showcasing the power of community support in times of hardship.
