The National Democratic Committee appeared to show support for New York City Democratic mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani in a recent social media post, despite the growing controversy surrounding his anti-Israel views and far-left policies.
In the post, Mamdani was featured telling the “I’ve Had It” podcast hosts that “We welcome anyone to join this movement.”
Mamdani highlighted how he built a diverse coalition of supporters, including those who had previously voted for President Donald Trump, to secure victory in the Democratic primary back in June by welcoming everyone to be part of his movement.
Social media users quickly criticized the DNC for endorsing Mamdani, with some suggesting that the Democratic Party is veering towards socialism. Manhattan Institute fellow Daniel Di Martino tweeted that the DNC’s post signaled the party’s shift towards socialism.
The DNC’s gesture of support for Mamdani comes at a time when prominent party leaders such as New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries have not yet endorsed his campaign, just two months before Election Day.
When questioned about attempts by Republicans to link Mamdani with vulnerable Democrats, DNC Chair Ken Martin emphasized that the Democratic Party encompasses a wide range of ideologies, from conservative to progressive.
Despite the DNC reaffirming their backing for Mamdani, party officials and establishment figures have been cautious in fully embracing him and his radical policy agenda. Throughout the summer, there have been numerous reports detailing Mamdani’s controversial statements, political affiliations, and contentious positions.
Reports have revealed that Mamdani has surrounded himself with activists who hold anti-Israel sentiments and advocate for socialist principles.
Furthermore, Mamdani’s past remarks at a church led by a controversial pastor, his advocacy for BDS (Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions) against Israel, and his calls for the abolition of private property have raised concerns among critics.
His father, Mahmood Mamdani, a Columbia University professor, has also faced scrutiny for his anti-Israel comments and support for radical activists. Mahmood Mamdani has been associated with organizations that promote boycotts and sanctions against Israel, and his social media posts have been criticized for their anti-Israel rhetoric.
Amidst these controversies, Mamdani’s bid for mayor has sparked a debate within the Democratic Party, with some viewing his candidacy as a test of the party’s values and direction.
It remains to be seen how Mamdani’s candidacy will unfold in the coming weeks leading up to the election, as the Democratic Party grapples with internal divisions and ideological differences.
