DNC Gaza resolution withdrawn amid growing Democratic Party discord

The Democratic National Committee’s (DNC) summer meeting in Minneapolis took a contentious turn as tensions flared over the ongoing war in Gaza between Israel and Hamas. The discord came to a head when a key DNC committee voted down a resolution calling for an arms embargo and suspension of U.S. military aid to Israel.

While the party reaffirmed its support for diversity, equity, and inclusion values, the focus remained on the conflict in Gaza. DNC chair Ken Martin introduced a resolution calling for a ceasefire and humanitarian aid access to Gaza, which was unanimously passed. However, a more forceful resolution from new DNC member Allison Minnerly was defeated, sparking opposition from some members who wanted a stronger statement.

The split within the party reflects a broader shift in Democratic support for Israel, with concerns rising over the growing death toll in Gaza. Progressive members are calling for more decisive action, while moderates are cautious in blaming Israel for the conflict. The divide highlights the party’s struggle to address the crisis in Gaza and find a unified stance.

Despite the defeat of Minnerly’s resolution, the debate was civil, with no disruptions during the committee meeting. Martin’s decision to withdraw his resolution in favor of unity was met with approval, but some members expressed disappointment at the lack of further discussion on Gaza.

The Republican National Committee criticized Martin for backing down on the resolution, accusing him of bowing to radical members. The competing Gaza resolutions were among 19 voted on by the panel, including a resolution affirming diversity, equity, and inclusion values.

The resolutions passed by the panel will face votes by the entire DNC membership in the closing general session. The outcome of these votes will shape the party’s stance on critical issues and reflect its commitment to addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
