The Great Ones: A New Docuseries on the Edmonton Oilers’ NHL Reign in the 1980s

Ryan Reynolds’s production house Maximum Effort is set to release a new docuseries that will delve into the legendary reign of the Edmonton Oilers in the 1980s. Titled The Great Ones, the series will provide an unprecedented look at the lives and careers of the players who led the team to five Stanley Cup victories between 1984 and 1990.

Featuring five parts, the docuseries will include new interviews with the stars of the Oilers dynasty, including icons like Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier. In addition, viewers can expect insights from rivals, broadcasters, managers, and other key figures who played a role in the team’s success.

Directed by Emmy-winning filmmaker Austin Andrews, known for his work on the Netflix series Julie and the Phantoms, The Great Ones is scheduled to premiere on Super Channel in the winter of 2027.

While the Oilers continue to chase their first Stanley Cup since 1990, fans can look forward to reliving the glory days of the team through this captivating docuseries.

Maximum Effort, in collaboration with Score G Productions, Fennessey Films, Super Channel, and OEG Sports & Entertainment, is behind the production of The Great Ones. The production company is also known for the sports docuseries Welcome to Wrexham, which follows the journey of a Welsh soccer team owned by Reynolds and actor Rob McElhenney.
