DOGE initial findings on Defense Department DEI spending could save $80M, agency says

The Department of Defense is making strides in cutting wasteful spending by eliminating certain diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs. According to a recent announcement, the agency could save up to $80 million by axing these programs, which have been flagged as unnecessary by the Elon Musk-led Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
In a video posted on social media, DOD spokesman Sean Parnell shared some of the initial findings uncovered by DOGE. These findings included millions of dollars allocated to support various DEI programs, such as $1.9 million for holistic DEI transformation and training in the Air Force and $6 million to the University of Montana for strengthening American democracy by bridging divides. Additionally, $1.6 million was found to have been given to the University of Florida for studying the social and institutional detriment of vulnerability in resilience to climate hazards in Africa.
Parnell emphasized that these programs do not align with the core mission of the military and are considered distractions. By cutting these initiatives, the DOD anticipates saving $80 million in wasteful spending.
Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has directed the DOD’s civilian workforce to comply with Musk’s DOGE productivity email, which requires employees to list five things they accomplished. This directive comes after initial instructions not to reply to Musk’s email. Hegseth also mentioned that DOGE workers, many of whom are veterans, will help identify deficiencies in various departments, including the DOD.
Hegseth expressed confidence in the collaboration with DOGE, stating that their shared goal is to eliminate redundancies and prioritize core mission objectives over initiatives like DEI, woke culture, and climate change efforts that were established under the Biden administration. The decision to cut these programs has sparked controversy, with some questioning the extent of Musk’s involvement and access to sensitive data under the Trump administration.
Overall, the DOD’s efforts to streamline spending and refocus on essential functions are seen as a positive step towards greater efficiency and accountability within the agency. The partnership with DOGE reflects a commitment to eliminating unnecessary expenses and optimizing resources for maximum impact.
