DOGE leader Musk breaks with Trump over massive spending bill passage

Elon Musk recently expressed his disappointment with President Donald Trump’s “one big, beautiful bill” that was passed by Republicans in the House last week. In an exclusive interview with “CBS Sunday Morning,” Musk stated that he was disappointed to see the massive spending bill increase the budget deficit rather than decrease it, which goes against the work being done by the DOGE team.

The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which Musk previously led, has been focused on slashing wasteful government spending. The legislation, known as the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, aims to cut approximately $1.5 trillion in government spending. However, Musk’s criticism of the bill stands in contrast to Trump’s endorsement of it.

The bill, which passed by a narrow margin of 215 to 214 in the House, includes key provisions such as an extension of Trump’s 2017 tax cuts and exemptions for tips, overtime, and Social Security. Despite the victory for Trump and House Republicans, the bill still faces challenges as it requires Senate approval.

The U.S. government is currently over $36 trillion in debt, having spent $1.05 trillion more than it has collected in the 2025 fiscal year. With the Senate set to pass its own version of the bill, Republican leaders are aiming to have it on Trump’s desk by the Fourth of July.

It is important to note that all Democrats and two Republicans voted against the bill in the House, emphasizing the divisive nature of the legislation. The Senate’s version of the bill will need to address these concerns and work towards a bipartisan solution.

In conclusion, Musk’s critique of the spending bill highlights the ongoing challenges in managing government finances and ensuring fiscal responsibility. As the legislative process continues, it will be crucial for lawmakers to address these concerns and prioritize effective budget management.
