Don Cherry, 91, signs off from podcast for the final time

Legendary Canadian sportscaster Don Cherry bid farewell to his long-running podcast, “Don Cherry’s Grapevine Podcast,” in a bittersweet final episode. The 91-year-old Cherry had been at the helm of the popular podcast since August 2023, churning out a total of 313 episodes. His son and cohost, Tim Cherry, revealed on the finale that the podcast had amassed an impressive 6.5 million downloads over the years.
Known for his flamboyant suits and unapologetically bold opinions, Cherry’s career took a turn in November 2019 when he made controversial remarks during a televised rant about people not wearing poppies, which appeared to be directed at immigrants. Despite denying any ill intent towards new Canadians, Cherry was swiftly let go from his position. Bart Yabsley, the president of Rogers Sportsnet, cited Cherry’s “divisive remarks” as the reason for his termination, stating that they did not align with the network’s values.
For nearly four decades, Cherry had been a fixture on “Coach’s Corner” during “Hockey Night in Canada,” where his fiery personality and hockey expertise endeared him to fans across the country. His departure from the show marked the end of an era in Canadian sports broadcasting.
Reflecting on his storied career, Cherry expressed gratitude to his listeners on the final episode of his podcast. “Well, Tim, this is our last show. … Thanks everybody for listening and toodaloo,” Cherry said, bidding adieu to his loyal audience.
While Cherry’s departure from the broadcasting scene may have been abrupt and controversial, his legacy as one of Canada’s most iconic sports personalities remains intact. As fans reminisce about the highs and lows of his career, Cherry’s unmistakable presence and passion for the game will forever be etched in the annals of Canadian sports history.
