Dem senator who bashed Hegseth’s qualifications stands by DOD sec who oversaw botched Afghan withdrawal

Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal made headlines on Tuesday when he admitted that he would support Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin’s confirmation again if the vote was held today, despite Austin’s controversial actions during his tenure. This statement came after Blumenthal grilled Trump’s SecDef nominee Pete Hegseth earlier in the day over his qualifications for the position.

When asked by Fox News Digital if he would vote for Austin today, Blumenthal responded, “I would support General Austin as Secretary of Defense. I did when he was nominated. I would support Secretary Mattis that was nominated by President Trump during his first term. I would not support this nominee because [Hegseth] lacks the financial management skills, the character and confidence, as well as the moral compass.”

During the confirmation hearing, Blumenthal questioned Hegseth’s qualifications, stating, “I don’t believe that you can tell this committee, or the people of America that you are qualified to lead them. I would support you as the spokesperson for the Pentagon. I don’t dispute your communication skills, but I believe that we are entitled to the facts here.”

Austin has faced criticism from both conservatives and some Democrats for his handling of the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan and other perceived missteps during his tenure. Despite this, Blumenthal stood by his support for Austin, citing his previous vote in favor of his confirmation.

Republican lawmakers, including GOP House Speaker Mike Johnson, have been vocal in their opposition to Austin, with Johnson criticizing his leadership during the Afghanistan withdrawal and other decisions made during his time as Secretary of Defense.

In a statement to Fox News Digital, Blumenthal defended his stance on Hegseth’s nomination, stating that the hearing was focused on Hegseth’s record and not his own. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that the individual leading the Department of Defense is qualified and prepared to command the millions of Americans who protect the nation’s security.

Overall, the confirmation hearing and subsequent statements from Blumenthal highlight the ongoing debate over the qualifications and leadership abilities of key figures within the Department of Defense. As the political landscape continues to evolve, the role of the Secretary of Defense remains a crucial position that requires a careful consideration of both qualifications and character.
