Durbin urges release of Gaetz ethics report
The controversy surrounding former Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., and the ethics investigation into allegations of misconduct has taken a new turn. The office of Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., has spoken out against Gaetz’s attempt to “resign away” the investigation, citing his nomination for U.S. attorney general under President-elect Trump.
House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., has also weighed in on the issue, urging the House Ethics Committee not to release a potentially damaging report on Gaetz. The probe, which has spanned three years, revolves around allegations of sexual misconduct with a minor and illicit drug use. Gaetz has vehemently denied these claims.
Gaetz’s resignation effectively halted the investigation, as he is no longer a member of Congress. Speaking at the U.S. Capitol, Johnson expressed concerns about releasing the report, fearing it could “open a dangerous Pandora’s box.”
Durbin’s spokesperson, Josh Sorbe, emphasized the need for transparency in the investigation. He stated that there is bipartisan support for releasing ethics investigation materials after a member resigns, as it is essential for fulfilling the constitutional obligation of advice and consent.
Following Gaetz’s nomination for the Trump Cabinet, House Ethics Committee Chair Rep. Michael Guest, R-Miss., indicated that the investigation would conclude if Gaetz stepped down from Congress.
Johnson, when asked about the report, maintained that he would not intervene in the Ethics Committee’s decision. He argued that releasing the report would not align with established rules and traditions, cautioning against potentially harmful consequences for the institution.
Gaetz’s nomination for attorney general has faced criticism due to the lingering allegations against him. Some GOP members of the Senate have expressed doubts about his confirmation prospects, suggesting that he may encounter challenges in the confirmation process.
Overall, the unfolding developments in the Gaetz investigation underscore the importance of upholding ethical standards and ensuring accountability in public office. As the controversy continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how the Senate Judiciary Committee and other relevant authorities will address the situation.
