Dutch PM ‘ashamed’ by Amsterdam attacks on Israeli soccer fans

Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema has announced a three-day ban on demonstrations in the city, following overnight attacks on Israeli soccer supporters. The ban comes after Israeli fans were targeted by what she described as “antisemitic hit-and-run squads” who attacked, abused, and pelted them with fireworks. Riot police had to intervene multiple times to protect the fans and escort them to safety.

The Israeli government has responded by arranging for commercial planes to fly many fans back home. Videos circulating on social media showed riot police intervening in street clashes, with some attackers shouting anti-Israeli slurs. Some footage also showed Israeli supporters chanting anti-Arab slogans before the match between Maccabi Tel Aviv and Ajax Amsterdam.

Five people were treated in the hospital and released, with 20 to 30 others suffering light injuries. At least 62 suspects were arrested, with 10 still in custody. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said the decision to send planes was made after a “very violent incident” targeting Israeli citizens. By mid-afternoon on Friday, police confirmed that there were no missing persons.

Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof expressed his outrage over the violence, calling it a “terrible, antisemitic attack.” He assured Netanyahu that the perpetrators would be identified and prosecuted. Dutch King Willem-Alexander also expressed shock over the criminal acts committed.

Politician Geert Wilders condemned the attacks, blaming “criminal Muslims” and calling for their deportation. Police reported incidents before the match, including the tearing down of a Palestinian flag and the burning of another. Authorities also banned a pro-Palestinian demonstration near the stadium.

Antisemitic incidents in the Netherlands have risen since Israel’s offensive on Gaza, with Jewish organizations and schools reporting threats and hate mail. The Gaza war has sparked protests in support of both sides, leading to violent clashes in Amsterdam. The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas has resulted in casualties on both sides, fueling tensions and sparking spontaneous reactions.

In response to the escalating violence, Amsterdam has implemented a ban on demonstrations and granted police emergency stop-and-search powers. The city is working to ensure the safety of all residents and visitors, while condemning any form of discrimination or violence. The incidents in Amsterdam serve as a stark reminder of the need for peace and tolerance in a time of heightened tensions.
