Elections Nova Scotia warns of email scam
Elections Nova Scotia Issues Warning About Email Scam
Elections Nova Scotia is alerting the public to a new email scam that is targeting individuals in an attempt to gather personal information. The communications director for the organization, Naomi Shelton, has warned that the email is generated by a robot and is designed to look like it is coming from Elections Nova Scotia.
According to Shelton, the email prompts recipients to click on a link and provide personal information under the guise of preparing for internet voting. However, Shelton emphasized that there is no internet voting in the provincial general election, and Elections Nova Scotia does not send mass emails to voters.
“It is crucial for individuals to be vigilant and refrain from clicking on any links that request personal information,” Shelton stated. She advised treating the email as one would a bank scam and urged recipients to report it to the Canada Anti-Fraud Centre.
Shelton clarified that the only instance in which a person would receive an email from Elections Nova Scotia is if they had initiated contact first. This could include inquiries about obtaining a write-in ballot or expressing interest in working during the election.
In response to the email scam, Elections Nova Scotia has alerted the RCMP and reached out to the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security. Anyone who has received the fraudulent email is encouraged to report it to the appropriate authorities.
For individuals with questions regarding the provincial general election, they can contact 1-800-565-1504 or visit the Elections Nova Scotia website for more information.
By raising awareness about this email scam, Elections Nova Scotia aims to protect the public from potential identity theft and fraud. Stay informed and stay cautious when it comes to sharing personal information online.
