Elizabeth May reflects on the leadership of Green Party after a decision to step away

Elizabeth May Announces Resignation from Green Party Leadership

Elizabeth May, the long-time leader of the Green Party of Canada, made headlines this week with her announcement to step down from her position, a move she believes will bring new energy to the party.

“I think it’s important for organizations to embrace change and bring in fresh perspectives,” May stated in an interview with CityNews. “A leadership race will help achieve that.”

Having led the party since 2006, May has been instrumental in achieving several key milestones, including her own election to the House of Commons in 2011.

“Defeating a member of the Stephen Harper cabinet to become the first Green MP in Canada was a significant moment for me,” May reflected. “It felt like a David-and-Goliath victory.”

While eager to pass on the leadership baton, May is determined to ensure a smooth transition this time around, learning from the challenges that arose during her brief resignation in 2019, which she now describes as “disastrous.”

“We’ve made significant progress since then, electing three Green MPs in the recent elections,” May noted. “I want to make sure the party continues to thrive.”

Despite the current political climate and the urgency of addressing the climate crisis, May remains optimistic about the future of the Green Party and her role in advocating for environmental issues in Ottawa.

“This is a critical time for our country, with the challenges posed by the current administration in the US,” May emphasized. “It’s important for those who care about our country and the environment to step up.”

As the only Green MP in the House of Commons following the recent election, May is committed to holding the Liberal government accountable and pushing for action on climate change.

“I have exciting plans in the works to continue representing the Greens and driving meaningful change,” May shared.

With her resignation set to pave the way for a new leader to emerge, May’s legacy in the Green Party is sure to endure, leaving a lasting impact on Canadian politics.
