Elon Musk ends government role, but Trump says ‘he will always be with us’

Elon Musk is wrapping up his time in the Trump administration, but it seems that he won’t be straying too far from the political spotlight. In a recent post on Truth Social, President Trump announced that he will be holding a press conference with Musk at the Oval Office on Elon’s last day in office. Trump praised Musk, stating that he will always be with them, offering his help and expertise.

Musk’s official role in the government will come to an end on May 30, as he reaches the 130-day limit for his position as a “special government employee.” Since January, Musk has been leading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a department created by executive order on Inauguration Day.

In a statement on X, Musk expressed his gratitude to President Trump for the opportunity to work towards reducing wasteful spending. Musk highlighted that the mission of DOGE will continue to strengthen over time and become a fundamental aspect of government operations.

The White House press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, emphasized that the mission of DOGE is a collective effort, with all members of the President’s Cabinet and the President himself dedicated to cutting waste, fraud, and abuse in government spending. The initiative has already saved $175 billion through various measures such as asset sales, contract cancellations, and crackdowns on fraudulent payments, resulting in savings of approximately $1,087 per taxpayer.

Although DOGE has made significant progress in cutting government spending, it has faced criticism from Democrats in Congress. Some have accused Musk of wielding excessive influence and acting as an unelected official within the executive branch. Despite these challenges, markets have responded positively to Musk’s return to the private sector, with Tesla shares rising 4.2% following news of his government exit.
