Eric Adams to sue Trump admin over revoked $80M in FEMA migrant shelter funding for New York City

New York City Mayor Eric Adams, a Democrat, is not backing down in his fight against the Trump administration after the federal government secretly revoked more than $80 million in funding for the city’s migrant shelters. Adams announced plans to file a lawsuit to have the $80.5 million in FEMA payments returned, according to the New York Post.
In a letter sent to city Comptroller Brad Lander, counsel for the Adams administration stated that the city’s Law Department is drafting litigation papers and intends to initiate legal action by February 21, 2025. The letter also made it clear that there is no need for external legal counsel as the Law Department will be representing the City of New York in this matter.
This decision came after Lander urged the Adams administration to take swift action against Trump and Elon Musk, who leads the Department of Government Efficiency. Lander emphasized the urgency of the situation and stressed the importance of recovering the funds to prevent setting a dangerous precedent for the city.
The revocation of FEMA funds from New York City’s accounts was first discovered by Lander and he wasted no time in calling it “highway robbery.” Musk claimed that the funds were being used on luxury hotels to house illegal migrants, a claim that was repeated by Trump.
New York City had received two separate grants totaling $80.5 million during the Biden administration to help with housing migrants sent by Texas officials frustrated with the handling of the migrant crisis at the Southern Border. The funds were used to pay for hotel rooms, security, food, and other services for the migrants.
Despite facing challenges, including having federal corruption charges dropped against him, Adams remains committed to fighting for the people of New York City. The city’s Law Department is working diligently to ensure that the funds are returned and justice is served.
As Mayor Adams continues to take on the Trump administration, he remains steadfast in his mission to protect the interests of New Yorkers and uphold the values of justice and fairness. Stay tuned for updates on this developing legal battle.
