Erik Menendez was denied parole. Here’s what he said at his hearing

Menendez Denied Parole Following Emotional Hearing
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Erik Menendez’s bid for parole was denied by a panel of California commissioners on Thursday, following a detailed account of his upbringing and the events leading to his parents’ tragic deaths.
A Troubled Upbringing
Menendez opened up about his upbringing, stating, “I was not raised with a moral foundation. I was raised to lie, to cheat, to steal.” He described a tumultuous relationship with his father, who he alleged sexually abused him.
The Murders
Menendez and his brother were convicted for fatally shooting their parents in 1989. Menendez explained that he saw no difference between his parents as his mother was aware of the abuse. He expressed regret over his actions, stating, “I wish to God I did not do that.”
Prison Rule Violations
Commissioners questioned Menendez about his numerous rule violations in prison, including alcohol use, gang affiliation, and possession of a cellphone. Menendez admitted to using substances to numb his pain, but stated that he found sobriety and faith in 2013, committing to a new purpose in life.
A New Purpose
Menendez reflected on his transformation, saying, “From 2013 on, my purpose in life was to be a good person.” He expressed a desire for redemption and a belief in facing a different parole board in the afterlife.
