Eskasoni First Nation pays tribute to first responders

Community Honors First Responders in Eskasoni, N.S.

Firefighters, police officers, paramedics, and search and rescue crews were celebrated in Eskasoni, N.S., as community members came together to show their appreciation for their dedication and service.

First-of-its-Kind Event

Organized by the chief and council, the event aimed to honor the bravery and sacrifices of the First Nation’s first responders.

Chief Leroy Denny, himself a first responder, highlighted the challenges faced by these individuals, including mental health issues like PTSD.

Recognizing the Impact

Former RCMP officers, paramedics, and firefighters who have experienced hardships were acknowledged for their service. Leroy Denny emphasized the importance of mental health support for first responders.

A Heartfelt Gathering

Around a hundred people attended the event at Eskasoni’s powwow grounds, expressing their gratitude and support for the service people. Erin Denny, whose father served in the RCMP, stressed the significance of understanding the mental health struggles of first responders.

Appreciation and Support

Participants, including front-line worker Wekatesk Augustine, praised the dedication and selflessness of the first responders. Events like these help them feel valued and appreciated for their contributions to the community.

Embracing Tradition

The event included a parade and a smudging ceremony for former and current first responders, highlighting the cultural significance of honoring their work. Kirsten Denny, a paramedic and mental health counselor, shared her experience of providing care and comfort to those in need.

Looking Ahead

Following the success of the event, Eskasoni chief and council are planning to make it an annual gathering to continue recognizing and supporting the first responders who serve their community.
