ESPN airs pre-game prayer for Cotton Bowl after backlash for not showing national anthem after terror attack

In a heartwarming and poignant moment before the Cotton Bowl between Ohio State and Texas on Friday night, a prayer was aired on the field to bring comfort and unity to all those in attendance. The prayer, read by former chair of the Cotton Bowl Athletic Association, Fred McClure, followed a moment of silence to honor the victims of the California wildfires and the tragic terrorist attack in New Orleans on Jan. 1.

“Loving father, we seek your blessings today for all those gathered here and especially for those on the field as we come together to celebrate the 89th Cotton Bowl Classic,” McClure began. “We lift up the young men representing the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Texas Longhorns. Keep them safe from injury and harm. Instill within them a deep respect for one another, and reward them for their perseverance.”

The prayer continued with a call for unity and respect among all individuals, regardless of background or circumstance. McClure urged for barriers to be torn down through kindness, dignity, and grace, reflecting the values of sportsmanship and camaraderie.

The touching moment set the stage for an exciting matchup between Ohio State and Texas, with the Buckeyes ultimately prevailing with a 28-14 victory to advance to the national championship game against Notre Dame.

The airing of the pre-game prayer by ESPN comes in the wake of controversy over the network’s decision not to air the national anthem ahead of the Sugar Bowl game in New Orleans. The backlash prompted ESPN to later air the national anthem during a special segment on “SportsCenter,” but many fans felt the gesture was too little, too late.

In addition to ESPN, Allstate CEO Tom Wilson faced criticism for a video addressing the New Orleans terror attack just before the Sugar Bowl, of which Allstate is a corporate sponsor. Wilson’s message of unity and acceptance sparked backlash from viewers, with some vowing to cancel their insurance plans with the company.

Despite the controversy surrounding the pre-game presentations, the Cotton Bowl provided a platform for reflection, unity, and sportsmanship. As fans continue to support their teams on the road to the national championship, moments like the pre-game prayer serve as a reminder of the values that unite us all, both on and off the field.
